Change of Itinerary

Well, some technical difficulties have lead me to continually postpone my big costume figure updates. Instead, I will show you the styleframes I put together for my final in Motion Graphics. It's a title sequence for Pixar's version of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea. I'm pretty stoked, though I'm also pretty sure I won't have the time to make it really wonderful, just kind of neat. Anyways, my influences are the opening credits for Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events and the opening credits for Wall-E.

All of the pieces are painted with ink and watercolor, cut out in Photoshop, and will be dropped into AfterEffects and animated there.

I cast people at whim. Also, "Catloaf studios" is my workshop name. Based mostly on this guy I came up with when I was figuring out my logo:
Meanwhile, if you want to see what a real professional looks like when he does what we're doing in our costumed figure class, check out these drool-worthy works by Glen Keane:

Crazy People Are Fun to Draw

Since our model was sick last week, we drew from photos our teacher threw up on the projector. Our homework was then to either use one of those sketches or find some source material of our own to make a finished illustration from. Today I am going back to those sketches to playa round with what I did in class, but the other day I decided to have a little fun and go through my own references and see what ic ame up with.

Here are the thumbnail doodles with their respective references:

I got a bit frustrated with myself (I obviously didn't give myself much time to warm up). But I took one of the doodles I kind of liked and started to play around with watercolors...

ANY CRITIQUE IS WELCOME, THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS!!

They're fine, but not wonderful. So now I know if I HAVE to turn something in I can finish one of these and it'll be OK, but I'm not quite pleased yet. So I'm going back to my in-class sketches and seeing if I come up with anything better. ^_^

I was unexpectedly given today off of work, my first day without work or school (or both) in two months! I am going to do laundry and take advantage of the extra time to really explore a few different possibilities for this illustration!

I'll post the in-class sketches along with other color studies and thumbnails tomorrow.

A MAN costumed figure!

We finally got a guy to model for our class. Unfortunately, his poses weren't really my slyle and therefor I had a really hard time with the sketches and am having an even harder time with the finished illustration.

Gurmble grumle.

Here are the sketches from class.

ROBUTT

I'm working out a sort of letterhead/resume/business card design. This guy is a aprt of it. You can kind of see some of my process here, as I figure things out.

My brainstorming has been drastically refined from the horrible mess it used to be. Now I am always keeping in the back of my mind the possibility of showing these to people, and have thus begun designing my pages in a more intelligent way, and being fairly clean and deliberate with my layouts. It may sound silly, but I like being able to show my sketchbooks and things to people and not be embarrassed by the "bad" drawings or the chaotic mess of it.

Nuns and More

This was the model from last week.

My sketches from in class. I had a really hard time this night with getting things the way I wanted. I was so frustrated by the end. Ugh.

I started with ink.

Then I switched to colerase and marker.

 And finally just to pen.

The thumbnails as I figured out what I want to do for my final.

A color study for the final.

And here's the final: Done in watercolor on Arches paper. It's about 14 X 20

A detail shot so you can see some of the brush strokes.

And here is a snail because I needed to warm up before getting down and dirty with that final...

More Costumed Figure

I hated my last finished result so much that I've been working on a better one. here are some more thumbnails and color studies of ideas.

I plan on having a better final in a few weeks.

Tomorrow I will make a HUGE post of stuff. EXCITED!?!?!
